Kliff

Acting Leader of the Greymanes

Kliff is the protagonist of Crimson Desert and the character players spend most of the game controlling. He's the acting leader of the Greymanes — a mercenary company that he treats as family — and his story begins the night that family is torn apart.

Background

Before the Black Bears' raid, Kliff held the Greymanes together during a period of uneasy peace between factions in the Pailune region. His closest companions — Oongka, Yann, and Naira — fought alongside him through that stretch. Official material describes the Greymanes as more than a professional unit: they were, in their own words, family in name if not in blood.

The night attack that scatters them is where the game starts. Kliff survives, sets up what will become the Greymane Camp in Hernand, and begins working to find the others. His early journey takes him through Hernand's surrounding territory — a region described in hands-on coverage as busy and layered, with side content that makes the world feel lived-in.

Personality

Voice actor Alec Newman has described Kliff as suspicious, alert, and weathered on the outside — someone who keeps walls up but whose emotional core is defined by the bonds he's formed with the Greymanes. He's not driven by abstract heroism or the desire for glory. His motivation is specific: finding the people he considers family and reclaiming what was taken from them.

The character's cinematic portrayal reflects that. He's not particularly talkative, and the humor in his interactions tends toward dry observations rather than banter.

Combat Style

Kliff starts with a sword and shield, and the game builds its combat language around him. He can parry, grab, throw, and chain combo attacks with the kind of fluidity that suggests a fighter who has been doing this for a long time. What's unusual is one reported mechanic: Kliff can learn techniques from enemies by watching them fight, which fits with the mercenary background the story establishes.

Equipment variety expands as the game progresses. Great swords, spears, and axes are all available, and tools like the Crow's Wing glider and the Axiom Bracelet — which infuses attacks with fire, lightning, or ice — layer on top of the core combat rather than replacing it.

Relationships

Oongka, Yann, and Naira are the companions named in the official opening story material as the people closest to Kliff before the attack. Their loss is the emotional engine of his journey. Myurdin — the Black Bears' leader — is the opposing force at the center of the opening conflict and one of the main personal enemies in Kliff's path.

Damiane, a third playable character, enters the story later. She's described as someone who left her home in Demeniss and fell in with the Greymanes after the opening events rather than being part of the original group.
