Crimson Desert — wiki & guide
Crimson Desertis Pearl Abyss's open-world action-adventure. Follow Kliff, acting leader of the Greymanes, across the war-torn continent of Pywel to reunite his scattered comrades and reclaim what the Black Bears took — the heart of the Crimson Desert story.

About Crimson Desert
This section summarizes what players can expect from Crimson Desert before you dive into characters, regions, and factions.
Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure game developed and published by Pearl Abyss — the studio behind Black Desert Online. Originally revealed at G-Star 2019 as a multiplayer prequel, it has since evolved into a single-player-focused experience with online elements, built around one of the most ambitious open worlds Pearl Abyss has ever created.
The game takes place on the war-torn continent of Pywel, where mercenary bands carve out survival between crumbling kingdoms and shifting loyalties. You follow Kliff, acting leader of the Greymanes — a mercenary company devastated by a sudden night raid carried out by their rivals, the Black Bears. What begins as a search-and-rescue mission across Pywel's five distinct regions grows into something far larger, pulling Kliff into conspiracies that reach beyond the mercenary world entirely.
What to Expect in Crimson Desert
Combat Built Around Mastery
Pearl Abyss frames Crimson Desert's combat with a simple phrase: fight like a Greymane. That means weapon variety, chained combos, parries, grabs, and the ability to learn enemy techniques by watching how they fight. Kliff begins with sword and shield but can equip great swords, spears, and axes across the course of the game.
A Seamless Open World
Pywel is built as a single continuous landmass with no loading screens between regions. Five distinct zones range from the busy town of Hernand to frozen tundra, burning desert, rolling grasslands, and dense forests. The world reacts to time of day and weather, with dynamic systems that affect both combat and exploration.
Story Grounded in Characters
The Greymanes function as family, not just a faction. Kliff's relationships with Oongka, Yann, and Naira are at the emotional center of the game. Their separation after the Black Bears' attack — and Kliff's effort to find them again — drives the story forward in ways that feel personal rather than grand for its own sake.
Three Playable Characters
Kliff is the main character, but players can also control Oongka and Damiane at certain points. Oongka offers a heavier, more force-driven fighting style. Damiane brings a different perspective to the world of Pywel entirely. Each character interacts with the same world differently.
Characters
Key figures in Crimson Desert — the Greymanes and allies who shape Kliff's journey through Pywel
Kliff
Acting Leader of the Greymanes
Kliff is the protagonist of Crimson Desert and the character players spend most of the game controlling. He's the acting leader of the Greymanes — a mercenary company that he treats as family — and his story begins the night that family is torn apart.
Oongka
Greymane Warrior
Oongka is one of Kliff's closest comrades in the Greymanes and one of two additional playable characters in Crimson Desert. He's an orc fighter whose loyalty runs deep enough that he doesn't waste words on it.
Yann
Greymane Comrade
Yann is one of Kliff's named companions in the Greymanes, placed alongside Oongka and Naira in the official opening story as one of the core figures whose loss drives the events of the game.
Naira
Greymane Comrade
Naira is one of Kliff's closest companions in the Greymanes, named alongside Oongka and Yann as part of the core group whose scattering sets the game's story in motion.
The World of Pywel
Crimson Desert's Pywel spans five regions — each with distinct conflicts, biomes, and stories
Hernand
The starting region and home of the Greymane Camp. A busy area with significant optional content surrounding the main town.
Pailune
The region where factions maintained a fragile balance before the Black Bears' raid disrupted everything.
Demeniss
Damiane's homeland, the third playable character who joins the Greymanes later in the story.
Delesyia
One of Pywel's five regions. Details beyond its existence remain limited in pre-release material.
Crimson Desert
The region that gives the game its name — a vast, sun-blasted landscape that features in later portions of the story.
Factions
Mercenary companies and powers that drive conflict in Crimson Desert — from the Greymanes to the Black Bears and beyond.
The Greymanes
The Greymanes are Kliff's mercenary company — a tight-knit group of fighters who have been together long enough to call each other family. The game begins the night a rival faction tears that apart.
The Black Bears
The Black Bears are a rival mercenary faction and the force behind the attack that destroys the Greymanes at the start of the game. Their leader, Myurdin, is the central personal antagonist in Kliff's story.
